The details.
The Mishy Gown by Trellis Lane is what happens when a designer stops trying to add things to a dress and starts taking them away. One shoulder, one sleeve, one long clean line of deep charcoal crepe from the drape at the collarbone to the floor — and a single soft cascade of fabric falling down the hip to stop it ever looking plain. For the Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom who wants to look modern rather than mother-of-the-something, this is the one our stylists reach for.
The asymmetric cut is doing quiet work for you. The neckline drapes across the collarbones and settles just off one shoulder, and a soft flutter bell sleeve falls to the elbow on that side, giving movement and coverage across the upper arm. The other shoulder stays bare — so this is a gown for a mother who is happy with one arm on show, and if you would rather have both covered, our Cece or Georgia will suit you better. Through the body the crepe is gathered at the waist and released into a cascading ruffle that falls down the side of the skirt, drawing the eye vertically and softening the hip. The skirt itself is a straight, unbroken column with a discreet walking split at the hem so you can move, sit and climb into a car without a second thought.
Charcoal is the shade mothers ask us for when they want the depth and forgiveness of black without the severity of it. It photographs beautifully in both church light and evening light, it never competes with the bride, and it sits comfortably beside navy, emerald, burgundy, blush and white bridal parties. Gold or pearl accessories both work; the small gold ornament at the shoulder gives you your starting point.
Made to order by Trellis Lane in Australian sizes 4 to 30, fully lined, with a concealed centre back zip. Crepe of this weight is the most forgiving fabric in occasionwear — it skims instead of clinging, and it holds its shape from the ceremony right through to the last dance.
Trellis Lane
Trellis Lane is a formal wear brand trusted by Australian mothers of the bride for quality fabrication, flattering silhouettes, and beautiful colour options. Their extensive collection covers everything from beaded and embroidered full-length gowns to sequin midi cocktail styles and elegant peplum designs. If you're looking for a gown that balances genuine elegance with wearable comfort, Trellis Lane is an excellent starting point.
Size & fit
How do I get the best fit in my Trellis Lane gown?
The most reliable way is to be measured by a professional tailor. If that isn't possible, measure yourself with a soft tape over your undergarments — snug, never tight — across the fullest part of your bust, your natural waistline and the fullest part of your hips.
How do I find my size?
Always use the Trellis Lane size chart on this page rather than your usual shop size — designer sizing varies, and every gown is made to that chart. Prefer a second opinion? Send your measurements to our stylists and we'll match you to the right size.
What if I'm between two sizes?
Size up. It's far easier for a local tailor to take a gown in than to let it out, and most mothers have a small alteration — a hem or a little nip at the waist — for that perfect finish anyway.
Can I try the style before I commit?
Yes — our Try Before You Buy service sends a showroom gown to your door, so you can check the fit, colour and feel in your own light before ordering.
Ordering & production
When should I place my order?
As early as you comfortably can — we recommend at least 20 weeks before the wedding to allow for production, shipping and any alterations. Closer to the date? Message us with the style, colour and size and we'll check what's achievable.
What does made-to-order mean?
Your Trellis Lane gown is brought to life specifically for your order once you purchase — never pulled from a warehouse rail. It's how we can offer the full size and colour range. Please note it's made to the designer's standard pattern, not custom-made to your exact measurements.
Can my order be rushed?
Sometimes — it depends on the designer's current workflow and your event date. Message the team before ordering with your date and preferred colour and we'll confirm what's possible.
Colour & coordinating
How do I make sure my colour works with the wedding palette?
Order a fabric swatch first — a screen never shows colour truly. A swatch lets you hold the real shade against the bridal party's palette in natural light. Our stylists are happy to help you coordinate so your look complements the day without clashing.
Can both mothers wear the same designer?
Absolutely — many do. Tell us both roles, mother of the bride and mother of the groom, and we'll help you choose two looks that sit beautifully together in the photos.
Returns & exchanges
Can I return my Trellis Lane gown?
Because each gown is made especially for you, made-to-order pieces are final sale, so we can't offer a return or exchange for change of mind. Please double-check the size chart before ordering — and if something isn't quite right when it arrives, reach out anyway and we'll do whatever we can to help.
Care & maintenance
How should I care for my gown?
We recommend dry cleaning only, by a cleaner experienced with eveningwear, to protect the fabric and its finish.
